The Palos Park Public Library Mission
The mission of the Palos Park Public Library is to provide a wide range of books, resources and programs for a lifetime of learning and enjoyment in a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere. We believe that the library is an important place for all community members to gather and socialize. We provide meeting space, areas to sit and read quietly and room to study and work together.

Library Cards
Residents of the Village of Palos Park support the library through revenue paid through their real estate taxes. If you look on your tax bill, there is a line item for the Palos Park Public Library and the amount that you contribute. This entitles you and the members of your household to library cards that may be used in libraries in the Chicago Metropolitan Area, including many academic and special libraries, as well as all the public libraries.

The residents outside of the village limits that live in unincorporated areas, do not support any public library. Therefore, we ask that they pay a fee equal to what the average fee of a Palos Park resident if they wish to have a library card and check out items from the library or participate in our programs. This fee is $180 per family per year for all the services of this library. The staff will be happy to answer any questions pertaining to this matter. Anyone may come in and read, browse or ask questions. Check us out. Palos Park Library Cards are available for children as young as 6.

History of the Palos Park Public Library
In 1927, as a memorial to her sister Jessie and her mother Emily Bartlett, Mrs. Lorado Taft donated the proceeds from the sale of "the effects of the old Bartlett home" to be used for a library.

In 1936, the Palos Park Woman’s Club established the Palos Library in a real estate office at the corner of 123rd Street and 82nd Avenue. Later that year the library was moved to the Improvement Club House which was located on the site of the present Recreation Center. For a short time the library was moved to the pastor’s study in the Presbyterian Church.

In 1940, the Palos Park Woman’s Club presented a permanently equipped library to the Village. The guest speaker on this occasion was Mrs. Taft. The Woman’s Club continues to operate the library until 1945 when the village took over and appointed a board of trustees.

The library leased a building on 123rd Street that had previously housed the Palos Park Post Office. The library moved to this site in 1957 and then purchased the building in 1967. In 1982, the library moved to its present site and completed an addition in 1993.

Please join us for all that the Palos Park Public Library has to offer.
